Fulu Miziki, meaning "the sound of trash" in Lingala, is a band originating from the Ngwaka neighborhood, a maze of streets in Kinshasa, capital of the DRC. They define themselves as an Eco-Friendly-Afro-Futuristic-Punk collective from a future where humans have reconciled with the earth and themselves. They produce a new music style called Twerkanda, an explosive afro disco-house/post soukous played exclusively with instruments made from recycled materials they assembled. For several years, members have focused on creating an orchestra from recovered objects found in trash, with instruments constantly evolving to explore new sounds. Crafting their own instruments, performance costumes, and masks is essential to their approach.
Their unique sound supports a pan-African message of artistic liberation, peace, and a critical view of the ecological situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and worldwide.
