Le Barbare

Where?
Escaliers du Marché 27

In the heart of Lausanne, this legendary address offers local, seasonal dishes, local artistic events and an eco-responsible approach. A friendly place where eating, drinking and chatting go hand in hand.
That little extra from the food insider "Cannelle Rebelle": Marta, the former manager of the café, created a hot chocolate that became famous: an unctuous delight to be discovered!
Favourite drink: the Marta hot chocolate

Lausanne Cathedral

HeritageArchitectureHistory

Lausanne's iconic cathedral has towered over the city for more than eight centuries. A masterpiece of Gothic art, it captivates visitors with the harmony of its architecture, the richness of its sculpted details and the serenity it inspires. From its tower, an exceptional panorama opens up over the roofs of the Cité, Lake Geneva and the Alps.

Due to the renovation of the vaults in the south transept, the rose and its stained glass windows will be inaccessible until spring 2027.

Le Barbare, located next to the Escaliers du Marché, is a must-go café restaurant that I highly recommend. Every day, they publish the day’s specials on Instagram, with two delicious local and seasonal dishes to choose from. I love to take a seat on their terrace and savour a Marta luscious hot chocolate, an absolute essential for me!

More info

This historical café has always been a meeting spot for Lausanners from all backgrounds and across the generations, a place that brings people together and appeals to everyone. Open all day from Tuesday to Sunday, its Chef Etienne serves homemade cuisine cooked from local, seasonal products. Head there in the morning to savour its famous “Chocolat chaud Marta” (Marta’s hot chocolate), at lunchtime and in the evening to taste delicious daily specials or on Sunday to enjoy an incredible brunch.

In the summer, its terrace, located below the old town and overlooking the “Escaliers du Marché” wooden staircase, is much sought out for a tasty snack or to sip a drink peacefully. It’s also a meeting place made all the livelier by culinary and cultural events that lead to exchanges.

This establishment has been awarded the “ Café historique de Lausanne ” label established by the city of Lausanne in 2021. Iconic café and tea room dating from 1952. Main meeting place for students in Lausanne, including female students (a novelty at the time).
